Today 808s & Greatest Hits share their much anticipated second album Greatest Hits II. The musical project of Skube Burnell and his many collaborators, 808s & Greatest Hits continue to spin the wheels of experimentation in the follow up to their debut album Cabin Vibes which was released in late 2019. Burnell begun working on the new album in late 2019 whilst recording and mixing previous release Cabin Vibes. The album started as an eclectic suite of 16 songs written by Skube that were eventually honed and whittled down to a tidy selection of 8 - crafted, mutated and reworked to evolve into its final form - Greatest Hits II. As opposed to the solo recording process of Cabin Vibes, 808s & Greatest Hits enlisted the help of producer, engineer and all round good guy / musical virtuoso Dylan Young (Way Dynamic, Snowy Band, Emma Russack, Cool Sounds) to help shape the new album.

Early stages of recording took place between Skube and Dylan’s homes with Dylan serving as the primary producer and engineer on the tracks with John Lee from Phaedra also stepping in to work on album track ‘Maslow’s Pyramid’. The tracking and recording was mostly completed by Skube and Dylan with some wildcard bandmates and friends jumping in, in classic 808s fashion to fill the sonic gaps. Greatest Hits II’s seamless shifts between inner and outer worlds are thanks to creative experimentation in songwriting. The album kicks off with an instrumental that evokes opening film credits and from there on in, things head to new territories with each track. Songs traverse genre and thematic lands but the distance is always visible and reachable.

"This was a mental time capsule, anchored to some day back in 2015 where I was thinking 'hey life is pretty easy right now, it's in a really good state, I want to remember how things are at this moment'. I saw it as 'ideally, there's a sweet spot in your mid 20s where you're at peak hedonism where you have full autonomy in your life and minimal responsibility'."

On 'Connecting Flight' Skube Burnell had this to say:

"I wrote this after getting off the phone to my wife when she was stuck in an airport. She was waiting a few hours to get on the second flight of two long back-to-back flights, on her way back home. As expected, she was tired, bored and uncomfortable. The song came together very quickly."

On 'Abduction' Skube Burnell had this to say:

"The initial demo had a dank, uneasy feel to it so I thought it would go well with some lyrics about alien abduction. I've experienced some sleep paralysis over the years which lend themselves to the imagination and I once had a vivid dream about being beamed out of my bed and being pulled out of the house through the wall. The lyrics were also inspired by Whitley Strieber's book Communion which conjured some kooky imagery."

Elizabeth's debut album was met with critical acclaim when it was released in 2019 - the album was Feature Album on community radio stations fbi radio, Syn FM, Edge Radio, Triple R and reached #1 on the AMRAP Air Charts. 

TWWON was featured as the Herald Sun’s favourite album of 2019, received glowing reviews in The Saturday Paper, Sydney Morning Herald, The Fader and independent blogs and publications. Elizabeth and her 7-piece band had planned to launch the album in major cities in Australia until the COVID-19 crisis unfolded which left touring plans on ice. Since the original album's release, Elizabeth signed to New York-based label AntiFragile. 

The relatively new label was founded in 2017 by music industry veteran Tom Sarig, who prior to setting up AntiFragile Music managed the careers of Lou Reed, Blonde Redhead, Le Tigre, Violent Femmes, The Drums, Bryan Ferry/Roxy Music and many others. The new deal will see AntiFragile Music release Elizabeth’s music worldwide excluding Australia & New Zealand, where she will remain on Our Golden Friend. Elizabeth joins the likes of Tia Gostelow, Wallis Bird, Jake Isaac and Reyko on the AntiFragile roster.

The release of the worldwide deluxe release will feature all the original songs from TWWON, as well as six raw and emotional piano tracks recorded by Elizabeth in her home studio during the isolation / lockdown period. The new tracks include stripped back piano versions of album favourites Parties and Death Toll + four new original songs and a stunning cover of Fleetwood Mac’s Go Your Own Way which was released and the video was premiered on Earmilk HERE.

Alongside the much loved tracks from the original album these new and raw piano tracks offer a glimpse into a small period of time and the heart wrenching cocktail of isolation, hope and vulnerability felt by all throughout 2020.

Today Elizabeth shares the captivating video for her cover of Fleetwood Mac's song 'Go Your Own Way'. The video premiered overnight on Earmilk who said:

POPPONGENE 'FUTURES UNSURE' REMIX EP OUT DIGITALLY TODAY

Today Poppongene, the alias of Melbourne multidisciplinary artist Sophie Treloar shares the remix EP of her debut EP 'Futures Unsure' digitally via Our Golden Friend.

The EP was premiered this week on Purple Sneakers who had this to say about the Remix EP "Each rework has so much love and care attached to it, respecting the fragility of its original song and honing in on whatever it is that drew the artist in in the first place. A similarly blissful body of work compared to that of Poppongene‘s EP, this remix EP is something seriously special."

After Poppongene released her debut EP 'Futures Unsure' earlier this year to critical acclaim and extensive community radio play, Poppongene sent the call out to friends and collaborators to give the tracks from Futures Unsure their own spin and rejig. This resulted in a swirling collection of eclectic versions of the tracks from the EP.

"It’s so refreshing to hear the songs from Futures Unsure reimagined by all of these talented sweethearts. They’re all so unique and I can hear pieces of each artist in all of them. It was a really fun collaboration project to complete while in isolation and made me feel more connected to my friends and my community."

Poppongene has already shared two tracks from the Futures Unsure Remix EP - 'I Can't Be What You Need' from friend and collaborator Sunbeam Sound Machine HERE and the second remix, 'Already Gone' from upcoming producer and musician Market HERE. Both of these tracks were released with accompanying visuals shot by Sophie of the band and Lee Hannah of Market on Mini DV, providing some well needed sunny respite for the current climate. 

The collection of musicians featured on the EP are Sunbeam Sound Machine, Dianas, Snowy Band, Market, Bonnie Knight & Good Morning.

Poppongene's recently released EP, Futures Unsure, marks a distinct step forward in the artistic development of Poppongene, the alias of Melbourne multidisciplinary artist Sophie Treloar. The eight track EP was created in collaboration with producer and multi-instrumentalist Tim Harvey (Jade Imagine, Gena Rose Bruce, Lisa Mitchell, Emma Louise).  With Futures Unsure, Poppongene closes a difficult but rewarding chapter in her personal life whilst discovering a newer, queerer self.  As a heartfelt document from this time, the listener is beckoned to walk alongside her on her blooming musical journey. Futures Unsure is out now on all streaming services, and can be purchased on limited edition cassette.

Originally from Byron Bay, Treloar is now based in Melbourne, and plays as Poppongene both solo and with a five-piece band, with Skube Burnell, Gemma Helms, Justin Kuchel, and  Deanna Ramsey.

Poppongene has played significant shows, supporting Lucy Dacus (US), Weyes Blood (US), and Slow Dancer, and also showcased at industry music conference BigSound in 2019. Poppongene’s music is drenched in the sun’s rays but still isn’t afraid to embrace all seasons. With this project, Treloar masters a glistening sound all her own - poppy and phosphorescent, furnished with catharsis. Poppongene makes music for moods, ebbing and flowing down the river of figuring it all out.

POPPONGENE SHARES ALREADY GONE (MARKET REMIX) FROM FORTHCOMING FUTURES UNSURE REMIX EP OUT 4TH SEPT

Today Poppongene shares a remix of 'Already Gone', courtesy of Market. This track is the second offering from her forthcoming Futures Unsure Remix EP.

Market is the project of Melbourne-based artist Lee Hannah, who has previously released dulcet, ambient music as The Townhouses, acted as a session musician for Wafia and Poppongene and played as one half of house-tinged duo Take Your Time. Market's solo sound showcases a love for summer-tinged cassette lo-fi pop production. Their first EP was released on Healthy Tapes in mid-2019 and featured collaborations with Tanya Harper and Lauren Abineri.  

Poppongene's debut EP Futures Unsure was released earlier this year to glowing critical reviews and reception. The remixed and reworked versions of Poppongene's songs from a hand picked selection of local musicians and collaborators will be released via Our Golden Friend on Friday September 4th.

"I was so excited for Lee (Market) to remix a Pops song. I love their music so much, and it really is such a treat to hear how the two differing sounds melded together. It’s also nice to hear this song transformed from a heart-acher into a nuanced and carefully considered banger."


Market had this to say about working on the remix:

"It was super hard to pick a song when Sophie and I were chatting about a remix, but in the end I really loved the sincerity of Already Gone and wanted to play around with expanding that mood and space a little further. I liked the idea of keeping the sounds just as minimal, but tinkering with the drum machines to create a sense of urgency and release. The original wasn’t recorded to a click track, so there are a bunch of these very slightly out of time blemishes that I really love."

The remix is the second track off of the Futures Unsure Remix EP. Poppongene sent the call out to friends and collaborators to give the tracks from Futures Unsure their own spin and rejig.

Today Melbourne based artist Poppongene is excited to share a remix of I Can't Be What You Need a track that features on her recently released debut EP Futures Unsure. I Can't Be What You Need was remixed by long time friend and musical collaborator Sunbeam Sound Machine and is the first remix to be released from the forthcoming Futures Unsure Remix EP out digitally on Friday 4th of September via Our Golden Friend.

The remix was premiered yesterday on Pilerats with a glistening, sun drenched video created by Sophie Treloar and Lee Hannah and edited by Lee Hannah. The video was shot on the land of the Kaurna people. With picturesque moments caught on Mini DV and featuring glorious scenes of a breezier time, the video is a welcome respite from the current climate of life.

Of the remix, Poppongene says:

"Nick asked me if he could do a remix of I Can’t Be What You Need after the first time hearing Pops play it live. And after playing in Sunbeam with Nick for the past seven years, I was quite interested to see what he’d make my music into! The result is a fun/absurd Poppongene X Moby X Sunbeam X Janet sandwich. And I love it. Eat it up!

Sunbeam Sound Machine had this to say about working on the remix:

'I wanted to make this remix from the first time I heard Poppongene play the song live. That hook got stuck in my head but the song wasn’t recorded yet so I couldn’t listen to it. Instead the hook kept repeating and I made up some other stuff to go around it. Once it was recorded Soph was kind enough to indulge me and let me have a tinker with her lovely song. It was inspired by some ambient stuff from the ‘90s I’d been listening to, as well as Janet Jackson’s 2001 smash hit ‘All For You.’

The remix is the first taste of the Futures Unsure Remix EP. Poppongene sent the call out to friends and collaborators to give the tracks from Futures Unsure their own spin and rejig. Artists featured on the remix EP are Sunbeam Sound Machine, Dianas, Snowy Band, Market, Bonnie Knight & Good Morning.
