Today Poppongene premieres the animated video for new single Don't Even Know, via YouTube. The incredible video, by Carolyn Hawkins (School Damage, Parsnip), was created using stop motion over many hours during the isolation period.  Don't Even Know is the fourth single from long awaited debut EP Futures Unsure, ahead of its release on Friday 3rd July.

The video's animator Carolyn Hawkins says of the video, "Being quite a labour-intensive technique, it was the perfect all-consuming iso project... The materials I used to create my hand cut elements came from sources I already had around the house, such as coloured card, wrapping paper, and an old book entitled ‘The Earth and Its History’. [Poppongene] and I spent a bit of time brainstorming and coming up with some imagery that related to the song, centering around the tensions between nature and the city, geological shifts, and how these things can act as visual metaphors for the changing nature of relationships."

On the themes of the single Poppongene says "Don't Even Know was written in the midst of a relationship breakdown. It follows the subtle observations of change and disconnection. It's punchy and direct, both lyrically and tonally. I distinctly remember feeling particularly irked when I wrote this song, a feeling which translates suitably. It feels like a small step away from the usual dreamy nature of my music which is a refreshing change."

Taken from upcoming EP Futures UnsureDon't Even Know  marks a distinct step forward in the artistic development of Poppongene, the alias of Melbourne multidisciplinary artist Sophie Treloar. The seven track EP was created in collaboration with producer and multi-instrumentalist Tim Harvey (Jade ImagineGena Rose Bruce, Lisa Mitchell, Emma Louise).  With Futures UnsurePoppongene closes a difficult but rewarding chapter in her personal life whilst discovering a newer, queerer self.  As a heartfelt document from this time, the listener is beckoned to walk alongside her on her blooming musical journey. Futures Unsure will be available to purchase on cassette, and can be pre-ordered now via Bandcamp HERE.

Originally from Byron BayTreloar is now based in Melbourne, and plays as Poppongene both solo and with a five-piece band, with Skube BurnellGemma HelmsJustin Kuchel, and  Deanna Ramsey.

Off the back of the success of her singles Wet TowelEternally Alone & Not Wrong thus far, Poppongene has played significant shows, supporting Lucy Dacus (US), Weyes Blood (US), and Slow Dancer, and also showcased at industry music conference BigSound in 2019. Poppongene’s music is drenched in the sun’s rays but still isn’t afraid to embrace all seasons. With this project, Treloar masters a glistening sound all her own - poppy and phosphorescent, furnished with catharsis. Poppongene makes music for moods, ebbing and flowing down the river of figuring it all out.
